The origins of Clayton date back to the mid-19th century, specifically to the year 1857. Joel Henry Clayton, alongside his two younger brothers, carefully laid out the foundation for what would become the town of Clayton. Born in the small village of Bugsworth (now known as Buxworth) in the United Kingdom, Joel Clayton decided to seek out new opportunities and emigrated to the United States in 1837. Before settling in California, Joel spent years moving across various states, but it was at the foot of Mount Diablo where he, along with his wife Margaret, would eventually establish their home and flourish. The naming of Clayton is an amusing anecdote that could have very easily turned out quite differently. Joel Henry Clayton and his associate Charles Rhine both had ambitions to have the town named in their honor. Fate, it seems, was to play a deciding role as they resorted to the chance of a coin flip to settle the matter. Fortune favored Joel, and thus, the town was named Clayton. Had the coin landed the other way, today, we might have known the area as Rhinesville instead. Both Joel and Margaret Clayton's lives were deeply interwoven with the town they founded. They spent their remaining years in Clayton, contributing to the local prosperity and community spirit. Clayton continues to honor its founders and their legacy, preserving the history and culture that make it a unique and cherished part of California.
