Located about 38 miles east of New York City on Long Island Sound, Bayville is a village at the northern end of Nassau County. Also called Pine Island, it boasts a rich history that spans over four centuries. In 1658, an English farmer named Daniel Whitehead purchased a piece of land at its current location from the Matinecock people. The settlement was originally called Hardscrabble, but it was renamed “Bayville” by Thomas Boyd in the late 19th century. In an attempt to transform the area into a summer resort, Boyd acquired almost every house in the settlement.
At the turn of the 20th century, Bayville consisted of a fishing village and lavish Gatsby-like estates. It became an incorporated village in 1919, which allowed many owners of large estates to establish security and political control over their domains. Bayville's development came to a near standstill in the 1960s and 1970s as the state legislature debated whether to construct a bridge over Long Island Sound from the village to Rye. In the end, Nelson A. Rockefeller decided to cancel the plan. It took about a decade for Bayville to recover economically from the negative impact of the plan.
Currently, Bayville is a relatively affluent community with about 6,700 residents. It covers a total area of 1.5 square miles and has a population density of 4,400 people per square mile.
