Graph: Upcoming 20 Days of Emporia Hotel Rates

Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Emporia, KS discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Emporia hotel for each day and each star rating category.

Emporia was founded as a business venture between newspaper editor G.W. Brown, Lawrence resident G.W. Deitzler, Lawrence merchants Columbus Hornsby and Lyman Allen, and Lawrence print foreman Preston B. Plumb. They formed their new town in 1857 when the state was torn apart by the slavery debate. They called it Emporia, after the city-state in ancient Carthage, hoping their own venture could also be described as “a flourishing market center.”

Plumb became the only member of the Emporia Town Company to settle in the new city. He started the city's first newspaper, the Kansas News, and made it an essential tool for local growth.

Today Emporia is home to just under 25,000 people, including many students and recent graduates. Both Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College have campuses here, which gives the city a youthful energy residents and tourists love.

When is the best time to visit Emporia, Kansas?

Emporia usually gets its best weather during fall. Daily highs sit in the mid-80s in September but drop to the mid-50s by the end of the season. Fall is usually dry, so you can leave your umbrella behind.

Summers are warm, with average daily temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s. However, this season is also Emporia's wettest. Local storms can be more than an annoyance. They can also turn violent at times. While Emporia hasn't seen a fatal tornado since June 1974, strong winds and relentless rain can make visiting during this season unpleasant. Research the local weather conditions and tornado safety before you leave to avoid any nasty surprises.

Spring weather can be pleasant, especially as summer approaches. However, as the weather warms to a balmy average in the mid-70s in May, rain becomes more common.

You'll need thick skin to enjoy Emporia during winter. The weather can be extremely cold, bringing more than 10 inches of snow over the course of the season. Ice storms and blizzards are also common from December to February.
