Elyria was founded in 1817 by Herman Ely who built not only his home, but also a sawmill, dam, and gristmill along the Black River. As more settlers came to the area, the city grew and by 1852 it had a population of over 1,500, three flour mills, a newspaper, and three grocery stores. Elyria Memorial Hospital was built in 1908 and has become an award-winning healthcare system.
