Gulfport has continued to thrive with the addition of the Carnegie Library and eventually the lively casino scene located along the gulf in Mississippi. The most significant challenges that the city faced have been two major hurricanes. Hurricane Camille struck in 1969 and was the second strongest hurricane to hit the United States. The hurricane added up to over a billion dollars in damage to the state impacting Gulfport directly.
Furthermore, New Orleans wasn't the only city devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Katrina produced 130-mph winds that hit Gulfport. Almost the entire town was flooded adding to the substantial damage of the hurricane in 2005.
Currently, Gulfport is well known and loved for its location near white sandy beaches with clear Gulf of Mexico waters plus the casinos that bring in thousands of visitors every year.
When is the best time of year to visit Gulfport, MS?
The summer is hot and humid in Gulfport, Mississippi. If you've never experienced the humidity in this part of the United States, get ready. Fortunately, that weather is perfect to enjoy the beach. You will end up paying a little more for hotels during the summer because of the beach, but it will be worth it to enjoy the water.
The spring is also traditionally pretty hot. If you're planning a trip, most of the spring is the perfect time to come. Just watch out for spring break. College students in the area will come to this area causing hotel prices to go up. It's generally a good idea to try and schedule your vacation around the spring break crowds.
Early fall is pretty muggy still, but hotel prices are lower as the crowds disperse. It's still hot enough to enjoy the beach and the water, but you will get some reprieve from the humidity. It's not warm enough to go to the beach during the winter. Hotel prices are at the most affordable during the winter, and the temperature is pleasant, but not warm. The winter is the best time to experience the casinos and visit the museums and restaurants since you won't see as many crowds and the prices for hotels are reasonable.

"Post Katrina Transformation"
Score
5.0 / 5
Since Katrina, the city has rebuilt and cleaned up well. Many buildings are new or were repaired and looked in good condition. The gulf in Mississippi has always looked muddy because of the MS River, however we noticed it seems much more clean and even had a blue tint. It just looked a whole lot better and the people were a whole lot nicer. It would seem from a tragedy sprang a new town worth taking another look at.
