The city of Pittsburg was first settled in 1839. At the start, it was called "New York Landing" and "Black Diamond." In 1911, the city's citizens voted to change the name to Pittsburg to honor Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the two cities' shared steel and mining heritage. The Pennsylvania city was spelled "Pittsburg" at the time but won an appeal process later that year to make "Pittsburgh" its official name, so the California city's spelling, in the end, differed from its namesake.
Today, Pittsburg offers a great place to enjoy California's gorgeous weather. It's the perfect base from which to explore the larger Bay Area, and there's plenty to do in Pittsburg and the surrounding cities as well.
