Fort Tilden was established in 1917 as a U.S. Army Coast Artillery Post. It protected the New York Harbor from naval attacks in both World War I and World War II. The fort was decommissioned in 2014 and became a natural area featuring a beach, dunes, and maritime forest. Fort Tilden is known for fall migration of hawks on its 317 acres. The park features hiking and biking trails, including some rustic trails that will let you see old missile barracks from the 1950s and 1960s, various abandoned structures, and a lookout tower. You can also view a changing backdrop of graffiti.
If you then continue west to Jacob Riis Park, you'll feel an urban vibe again on the 2-mile-long modern beach that features whale watching as well as food and beverage vendors, miniature golf, bathrooms, and changing areas. Created in the early 1900s, the 27.5-acre park was named for New York photojournalist Jacob Riis, who documented the plight of the poor and working-class residents who lived in New York City tenements. It was nicknamed The People's Park. A restored Art Deco bathhouse offers programs by park rangers as well as history exhibits. Jacob Riis Park provides a home to migratory songbirds each year.

Breezy Point Tip, the western point of the Rockaway barrier beach, covers more than 200 acres of ocean beach, bay shoreline, dunes, marshes, and coastal grasslands. You can fish for flounder, striped bass, and more, or simply enjoy the scenic beauty that offers lovely surprises as you explore. Breezy Point Tip is known for being a vital nesting area for piping plovers, which are a threatened species.
If you want to hit the water and see whales, dolphins, gorgeous scenery, and spectacular views of New York City, consider a ferry ride. The Rockaway Express Ferry starts in Manhattan at Pier 11 at South Street and Wall Street and goes to Jacob Riis Park in the morning, returning in the afternoon. The ferry runs on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and takes about an hour each way.
