The Evolution of MOSI: From Humble Beginnings to a Beacon of Science
The Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) has a storied history that began in 1962 when Hillsborough County approved funding for a youth museum located in Sulphur Springs. Initially named the Museum of Science and Natural History, it offered natural science exhibits and educational programs for both children and adults. By 1967, it had evolved into the Hillsborough County Museum, and less than a decade later, in 1976, plans were set in motion to construct a new facility in North Tampa. This would eventually become the landmark known as MOSI, permanently opening its doors on January 23, 1982.
MOSI's growth continued, and in 1995, it celebrated the completion of a 190,000-square-foot science center. This expansive space housed Florida's only IMAX Dome Theatre, a planetarium, a public library, and numerous exhibition galleries, both permanent and temporary. Over the years, the center underwent several renovations—in 1996, 2001, and 2005—positioning MOSI as the largest science center in the southeast and the fifth largest in the United States.
However, the journey was not without its challenges. On August 13, 2017, financial realities forced MOSI to close 85% of its buildings, including the IMAX theater. Many exhibits were removed, and the remaining ones were shifted to the former "Kids in Charge" area.
Despite past difficulties, MOSI's future holds promise. In 2022, discussions of constructing a new facility in downtown Tampa were ongoing but ultimately set aside due to financial concerns. Instead, MOSI has focused on enriching its current site in North Tampa. Plans are underway to expand the existing structure, introduce new exhibits, and develop innovative programs. Through these efforts, MOSI continues to inspire a love for science and industry, remaining a beacon for curious minds in the core of Tampa.
