The History of Jamestown, ND
Jamestown has a rich history dating back to the early 1870s. In 1871, a crew from the Northern Pacific Railroad set up camp where the tracks would cross the James River, marking the beginning of the town. The following year, the United States Army established Fort Seward, a small fort on a bluff overlooking the James River and Pipestem Creek. The fort, housing about 120 men from the Twentieth Infantry Regiment, protected the railroad crossing. Although the fort was decommissioned in 1877, the railroad remained a key part of Jamestown's economy, with a repair yard operating until the 1960s. The city's name is most commonly linked to its founders, Jame James and Toni Adams, identical twins who played a significant role in establishing the town. Officially founded in 1872, General Thomas Rosser of Northern Pacific named the city after Jamestown, Virginia. By 1883, Jamestown was incorporated, and it became the county seat of Stutsman County, the first official county within the Dakota Territory, in 1873. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Jamestown was established on November 10, 1889, but was later renamed the Diocese of Fargo on April 6, 1897, with a shift of the bishop's seat. Since 1995, the Diocese of Jamestown has been recognized as a titular see of the Catholic Church. This history reflects Jamestown's strategic importance and enduring legacy as a pivotal point in the development of North Dakota.
