Located about 60 miles east of Dallas, Canton is the seat of Van Zandt County. The city has a rich history that dates back to 1850, when it became home to a group of settlers from Old Canton in Smith County. From the beginning, the settlement was meant to be the county seat because it was located close to the county's geographical center. Construction of a courthouse, jail, and post office began in 1851.
In 1890, Canton was home to 421 residents, cotton gins, sawmills, flour mills, and a bank. It grew rapidly over the next few years. By 1896, it had a population of 800, three general stores, two hotels, several churches, two weekly newspapers, and a steam gristmill and gin. The settlement was incorporated as a city in 1919. Despite the Great Depression, Canton saw further expansion as a result of the development of the Van oilfield. Its city limits were expanded in the 1960s, doubling its territory.
Today, Canton has a population of about 3,800 and a total area of 5.6 square miles. It's best known as the site of the hugely popular First Monday Trade Days, the largest flea market in the United States.
