Tensions rose when a railroad had plans to cross Georgia and go into Conyers. The blacksmith refused to sell his land, but eventually was persuaded to after getting a good settlement from the Georgia Railroad. The tracks were fully running by 1845, and almost 400 new people moved to the area as a result over the following 10 years. The city has almost been destroyed before several times, but managed to survive each incident. As more people passed through the town, it became quite a party town, with five brothels and twelve saloons. The other side of town was much more respectable, with a college, hotel, and over 40 stores.
Many exciting events have occurred in the city over the years. In the 1970s, the crew of the "Dukes of Hazard" television show were in town to film a handful of episodes around the area. Other film and television crews have since been to the area, including the movie "In the Heat of the Night" and the TV show "The Originals." Conyers also had a part in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, as the city hosted the mountain biking and equestrian events. A brand new park was even built just for the occasion, named the Georgia International Horse Park.
