Exploring the Past: The Evolution of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum
The Sam Houston Memorial Museum began its journey under the guidance of Bertha Kirkley, a history professor at Sam Houston Normal Institute. She, with her students, initiated the restoration of Sam Houston's "Woodland Home" and law office in the early 20th century. Despite early efforts concluding in 1911, financial constraints and public apathy led to a period where the home suffered inappropriate changes.
The rebirth of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum gained momentum in the late 1920s. Joseph Lynn Clark, a dedicated history professor, sought financial aid from the Texas legislature. His efforts were successful — in 1927, he secured a $15,000 grant, which helped with the restoration of the Woodland Home and the creation of a museum to celebrate the life of Sam Houston. However, when the venue opened in 1929, there were concerns about whether the renovations truly reflected the historical look of the home.
As the 100th anniversary of Texas's independence approached in 1936, Clark got more financial support, this time a $35,000 grant from the Centennial Commission. This funding contributed to building a new rotunda and modernizing the location. Over the years, the museum continued to grow, notably with the addition of the Katy and E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center in 1995, which includes an exhibit gallery and a gift shop. Today, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum is looked after by Sam Houston State University.
