Charlestown is a city rich with history. The Battle of Bunker Hill took place here in 1775 on Breed's Hill, which overlooks the Boston Harbor. The town was very nearly destroyed during the battle, including its dockyards that were a source of economic prosperity. Between 1960 and the mid-90s, the Irish Mob ruled the area. In the mid-90s, the city was overtaken by young, urban professionals, bringing an end to the mob feuds.
The city of Charlestown is located on a peninsula that runs between the Charles and Mystic Rivers. City Square is located at the southern part of the peninsula and has a subway running beneath it that was once a train running above ground. The underground tunnels made way for a family friendly park where visitors can see the remains of the 1629 "Great House" owned by John Winthrop.
Bunker Hill Community College was once the Charlestown State Prison which was shut down in the 1950s. Visitors to the see can see the USS Constitution docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard, the Warren Tavern built in 1780 and the Freedom Trail. A Patrick Kelly design, St. Mary's church is also a must-see for anyone visiting Charlestown.
