The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert
San Francisco's Richmond District is located in the northwestern section of the city, just north of Golden Gate Park and bordering the Pacific Ocean. With the Sunset District, it is often called to as "The Avenues," referring to the numbered avenues comprising each block. It is one of the lesser-visited neighborhoods, but tourists can find much to enjoy in this area. The Richmond District is historically home to both Chinese and Russian communities that remain vibrant today. Russian restaurants, churches, and shops, in particular, make the Richmond very distinct from other San Francisco neighborhoods. Visitors may also enjoy the unique shops and ethnic restaurants on Clement Street. The Richmond is also a perfect jumping-off point for exploring Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, and Land's End park. Public transportation along the main east-west thoroughfare of Geary Boulevard makes travel from downtown to the Richmond District easy and fast.
