The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert
Few neighborhoods can evoke images the way that Haight-Ashbury can. Just the name alone brings to mind thoughts of flowers, peace, tie-dyed shirts, and burning incense. During the 1960's, young people came to Haight-Ashbury in droves searching for a sort of cultural utopia, and the neighborhood became a center of hippie subculture. Today, Haight-Ashbury has a whole new look and feel, with exclusive boutiques, high-end vintage clothing shops and trendy restaurants set amongst a few reminders of its colorful past. With more restaurants than you can count, an amazing array and variety of shops, and a bustling nightlife, Haight-Ashbury is definitely a fun place to visit. In addition to all of the newer attractions, visitors can still see cultural attractions such as The Grateful Dead house. The 36-acre Buena Vista Park offers some picturesque city views as well as opportunities for biking, jogging, or casual strolls.
