The Texas Prison Museum: A Unique Perspective on the State's Penal History
The Texas Prison Museum traces its roots back to establishing the first prison, known as "The Huntsville Unit" or more informally as "the Walls," in 1848. The decision to build it was made by the State of Texas Congress, which formed a commission to identify a suitable location. Sam Houston, a key figure in Texas's independence from Mexico and a resident of Huntsville, influenced the decision to establish the prison system's headquarters in the town. Today, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the state prison system, is the only Texas agency not based in Austin, the state capital. Five prisons are within Huntsville city limits, with another five within a thirty-mile radius.
The idea to create the Texas Prison Museum emerged in 1985, and the doors of a small rented building on the square in Huntsville officially opened as the museum in 1989. Thanks to the contributions of numerous volunteers, donors, and patrons, the Texas Prison Museum moved to its custom-designed building in 2002. In 2019, the venue expanded its exhibit showroom by an additional 5,000 square feet, bringing the total exhibit space to approximately 8,000 square feet. This space includes the gift shop, a 2,400-square-foot conference room with an adjacent kitchenette, and a research lab. The Texas Prison Museum continues to grow and educate the public about the history of the Texas Prison System. Make sure to add this landmark to your itinerary.
