"Birmingham Race Course, Alabama - where the thrill cascades from horse racing lanes, breathing life into the heart of an exhilarating city."By Samantha Marshall, Travel Writer
Birmingham Race Course, located in Birmingham, Alabama has a rich history that dates back to 1987 when it was initially known as Birmingham Turf Club. The project was designed to be a premier destination for thoroughbred horse racing in the Deep South, drawing crowds from neighboring states for high-stakes parimutuel betting. The track, accessible from the newly opened I-459 corridor, occupied a significant 7,000 acres of land northeast of downtown.
The inaugural horse racing event, the Birmingham Inaugural Stakes, took place on March 3, 1987, attracting 13,000 fans. However, the expected large crowds and wagers did not materialize, leading to significant financial losses. Despite efforts to rebrand and make the track more appealing to the masses, it was not enough to prevent financial difficulties, and the operators filed for bankruptcy reorganization in November 1988. It was sold to Delaware North, which reintroduced thoroughbred racing a year later. The reopening on May 26, 1989, attracted a record crowd of over 15,000. However, dwindling crowds and wagers led to Delaware North leaving in 1991.
Fast forward to the present day, and the Birmingham Race Course has transformed into a hub of entertainment, offering 777 gaming and simulcast horse and greyhound racing. The inclusion of greyhound racing and gaming has brought a new dimension to the racecourse, attracting a new wave of visitors.
