Discover Convenience: Key Facilities at Colorado Springs
Airport
The history of COS is as rich as the city itself. Opening its doors in 1927, the airport was built on a 640-acre land east of Colorado Springs. Initially, it was used for mail routes from Wyoming to Colorado, with occasional passenger carriers. The facility began to grow in 1937 when Continental Airlines initiated service between Denver and El Paso, Texas, with stops at Colorado Springs.
As the years rolled on, the Colorado Springs Airport underwent several transformations. Its first municipal terminal, built in an Art Deco style in 1942, was taken over by the military during World War II. However, it was returned to the city after the war. In 1966, a new terminal was constructed. The airport's long-standing history and architectural significance were recognized the same year when its original terminal, two hangars, and a caretaker residence were inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places. These historic structures now form the campus of the Peterson Air and Space Museum, adding a striking cultural touch to the facility. The terminal saw further expansion in the 1980s with the addition of six gates.
COS's growth hasn't stopped there. The facility achieved its highest passenger count of nearly 5 million in 1996. More recently, in 2021, Southwest Airlines began its service at the airport, bolstering its commercial traffic significantly.
