Johns Hopkins University opened in 1876 in Baltimore, Maryland, as the country's first research university. The university was named after Johns Hopkins, a Baltimore merchant who left behind seven million dollars for a school and a hospital. The university opened the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1889, which was followed by the university's School of Medicine four years later. Currently, the school and hospital serve as outstanding venues for public service and education.The university enrolls approximately 20,000 full-time and part-time students on three campuses, including Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Montgomery County, Maryland, and additional facilities throughout Baltimore and Washington, D.C., as well as China and Italy.
