The name of the municipality comes from John C. Breckinridge, the 14th Vice President of the United States. The residents changed the spelling when the former vice president joined the Confederate side during the Civil War. It was founded in 1859 when prospectors went to the area in search of gold during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. The gold mines have since been shut down, although tourists can visit some of these locations to explore the area's history. Some of the first ski trails were cut in 1961, resulting in the municipality becoming a prime destination for winter vacations.
When should you visit Breckenridge, Colorado?
Breckenridge does host several large events each year, so when these are going on, the hotel rates increase quite a bit. The Breckenridge Festival of Film is one of the events, which has been going on every September since 1981. The Backcountry Film Festival and the Ullr Fest, a week the honors the Norse god Ullr, also draw crowds of visitors each January. The large ski resort makes this a popular winter vacation destination, while the summer activities and events can also impact hotel prices.
The climate in Breckenridge includes very cold winters, with average lows in the single digits, and cool summers with high temperatures that rarely go above 71 degrees. If you're visiting during the winter months, bring plenty of warm clothing, especially if you're hitting the slopes. Hotel rates are highest during the winter because of the municipality's ski resort. Summer is considered the off-season, although the resort does host a number of outdoor activities.
