Amsterdam is very pretty with lots of history. I loved the food at Moeders and enjoyed a boat tour. Bars and cafes are quirky and down to earth.
Very friendly people. Brilliant public transportation. I loved the genever drink options, the Amsterdam Bar staff especially in the 'Dutch Courage' Bar were very knowledgeable about it and made several drink recommendations.

Amsterdam is only about 15-20 Minutes by bus from the hotel (bus stop directly in front of the hotel). The bus goes directly to the Amsterdam Central Station, which is a good place for last moment shopping. Amsterdam is a nice city, almost all main attractions are in walking distance from the center. I recommend walking around in early morning hours on the weekend, as most people only tend to come out after 10 am. The market by the canals is a must, and also the "Begijnhof" - a little oasis of peace in the busy city. The houses around the canals are very beautiful, and just walking around gives you a feeling of seeing something very special.

Transport system is very good and efficient. If you know how to read a map, you can get to many places easily. The tourist (day, weekly passes) are an advantage.
Loved the canals, bikes and the general activity of the area. Enjoyed a tour outside the city to the windmills, dutch shoe factory and the lake side village.
