Graph: Upcoming 20 Days of Taos Hotel Rates

Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Taos, NM discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Taos hotel for each day and each star rating category.

Spanish settlers arrived in 1615, calling their new colony Don Fernando de Taos. The Europeans and Taos people initially lived in harmony, but the Taos people soon resented the missionaries' efforts to change their way of life. They revolted in 1640, killing a priest and several Spanish settlers before fleeing the area. They did not return to their home for more than two decades. All was not peaceful, though. In 1680, the Taos Pueblo joined the Pueblo Revolt. Relationships between the neighbors were volatile until Gov. Diego de Vargas defeated the Pueblo people in a conflict in a 1696 conflict at Taos Canyon.

Taos began attracting artists in 1899. They formed the Taos Society of Artists in 1915. Many artist studios from that time, including the Ernest L. Blumenschein House and the Eanger Irving Couse House and Studio, are popular tourist attractions today. Taos continues to have a strong artistic community.

Taos is an exciting destination for travelers tired of the same old tourist hotspots. It's a modern city with a vibrant arts scene and contemporary restaurants, yet one which celebrates its rich past. Its historic buildings and mountain ranges provide a dramatic backdrop while its ski fields, hot springs, and waterways ensure there's always something to do. Travel off the well-worn tourist path and enjoy a different kind of vacation in Taos.

When should you visit Taos, NM?

Taos' semi-arid climate makes late spring and early fall the ideal time for visiting. May and September strike the right balance, with comfortable temperatures in the low to mid 70s during the day and affordable hotel prices.

It gets warmer during summer, but as the mercury rises, so do hotel prices. This is the peak travel season for Taos, which welcomes families taking advantage of extended school vacations. The weather can also be a little unpredictable. While average daily tops in the low to mid 80s are common, record temps have nudged 100 degrees.

Winters are chilly, with average daily highs in the low to mid-40s. While many travelers would be turned off by those temps, they're ideal for ski bunnies. If you plan on hitting the slopes at Taos Ski Valley, wait until after the New Year for the best prices. January also has the most snowfall, with an average of 7.2 inches falling in the year's first month.

Hotel La Fonda de Taos opened its doors in 1820, and it's been delighting guests ever since. While it's very different from the luxury chain hotels Americans are used to, as there is no pool, fitness center, or on-site restaurant, this downtown charmer doesn't skimp on upscale features. All the rooms are beautiful, but for true indulgence, you can't pass up the penthouse, with its kiva fireplace and picturesque patio. All guests enjoy access to the hotel's private D.H. Lawrence Forbidden Art collection. Book a special package with in-room massages, chocolates, and wine to truly feel pampered.

Inn on La Loma Plaza is another historic hotel with a rich history dating back more than 215 years. It's been lovingly restored with a respect for the original Southwest architecture. Each guest room has its own distinct decor, although they all have kiva fireplaces, TVs with DVD players, premium bedding, and combined bathtubs and showers. Freshly-cut flowers waiting for you are a beautiful touch. The innkeepers treat their guests to a gourmet buffet, featuring sausage patties, bacon, and daily specials including breakfast burritos and eggs Florentine quiche served in the sunroom or on the patio each morning.
