Property Description
The hotel originally dates from the 7th Century AD and its oldest building is clearly medieval in design albeit with a modified 16th century gallery, complete with original graffiti dating back to the 1700s etched into its windows. The hotel is famous for its New Street and inner courtyard facades, which were built with stone from Fotheringhay Castle in 1630. The stone mullion windows and timber staircase overlooking the inner courtyard are, reputedly, also from Fotheringhay Castle. The staircase is believed to be that which Mary Queen of Scots famously descended on route to her execution at the castle on 8 February 1587. Local history has it that a mark on one of the staircase's newel posts is an imprint of the queen's ring.More recently, the Talbot Hotel re-opened following an extensive refurbishment and restoration programme in 2012. As part of the changes, all agreed with English Heritage, the hotel now offers 34 bedrooms, including a selection of superior bedroom suites. The reduction in the number of bedrooms has also enabled the creation of a larger restaurant and now 21st century facilities rub shoulders with history. The Eatery at the Talbot is so named because it offers a comprehensive, but not overwhelming, menu available not only in the main garden restaurant, in the bar, or School room but also but also alfresco in the courtyard or garden. For larger groups we also have a 14 seater Oak Table with its own discrete area. The restaurant has one AA Rosette for an experience “that stands out in its local areaThe Coffee House, with its fully stocked patisserie unit, offers a true high street coffee experience. The difference is the period ambience as you take a sofa in the glass house or a seat on one of our varied internal and external areas. Our staff come to you to take your order and tempt you with the many treats that we bake on the premises. Free WiFi and newspapers are also available in the lounge areas.
