The picturesque San Antonio Zoo is home leopards, hippos, crocodiles, butterflies, and more. The collection of more than 3,500 animals is kept on 56 lush acres of land adjacent to Breckenridge Park and near the San Antonio River. Operated by the nonprofit organization the San Antonio Zoological Society, the park is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is open to the public 365 days a year.More than one million people flock to the zoo yearly to check out the 11 exhibits, which include a newly renovated aquarium, a bird house, an Amazon-themed exhibit, and more. The zoo has a strong commitment to maintaining high standards of care for all of its plant and animal inhabitants. The San Antonio Zoo began as a small collection of animals in 1914 an area of the city now known as Brackenridge Park. The park is named for Colonel George W. Brackenridge, who owned the animals and also the San Antonio Express-News.
