The picturesque San Antonio Zoo is home leopards, hippos, crocodiles, butterflies, and more. The collection of more than 3,500 animals is kept on 56 lush acres of land adjacent to Breckenridge Park and near the San Antonio River. The San Antonio Zoo began as a small collection of animals in 1914 an area of the city now known as Brackenridge Park. The park is named for Colonel George W. Brackenridge, who owned the animals and also the San Antonio Express-News.
