Norfolk, VA isn't simply just a military town. While it offers Nauticus, a great maritime museum and battleship exhibit, there are also plenty of attractions for everyone to enjoy which includes the beautiful Norfolk Botanical Garden, Virginia Zoological Park, the Scope Arena which houses many sports and entertainment acts as well as the newly renovated Chrysler Museum of Art. There is so much to see and do, not even including the downtown area! Granby St. in Downtown Norfolk is where it's at! There are a variety of sport bars (Scottie Quixx Bistro and Lounge), pubs, restaurants (Plaza Azteca) and clubs (Granby Theater), to entertain your nightlife interests. It is an area great for young professionals, college students and the working class. If you enjoy shopping, there is the MacArthur Center which has more than 140 stores. Finally, Waterside is also the place to be if you're looking for adventure by the water! There are art, Jazz and Cajun food festivals throughout the year there. You can even take a ride on the Spirit of Norfolk Cruises, offering lunch and dinner packages. Stay at the Tazewell Hotel and Suites or the Courtyard Norfolk Downtown and experience all that Norfolk has to offer!
Colonialism in the early 1600s began Norfolk's history as a city in the United States, and as a result Norfolk has historical properties that span centuries. Some of Norfolk's buildings bear scars from past battles during the Revolutionary War. Today, a large portion of Norfolk's arts and culture focuses on history. Other activities, like concerts, operas, and plays happen in Norfolk's plentiful performance venues.
When to Visit Norfolk, Virginia
The most crowded time to visit the Norfolk area is during summer, starting with Memorial Day. Rates go up in the metropolitan area near Virginia Beach because people are flocking to the shore to enjoy the warm weather and the waves. Lots of festivals happen in the area during this time; if you don't mind higher hotel rates and large crowds, it's a fun time to visit. Just remember that the Norfolk area has lots of colleges and universities, so times like graduation and move-in day will fill up the hotels near the schools.
Avoid crowds by booking in spring or fall instead. The weather is mild enough that you can do outdoor activities and walk around Norfolk without being cold. Fall foliage is quite beautiful in Virginia, adding an incentive to book during fall. Winters are mild, with average highs dipping into the high 40s and low 50s most days. You won't experience crowds to nearly the same extent as you would see in summer, making winter an ideal time for some savings and some extra space.
