For guests looking to learn about the area's involvement with the sea, a stop by the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration is required. The Institute is known for their involvement with marine life rehabilitation and research on beluga whales. History buffs will enjoy the Mystic Seaport, the United State's top maritime museum and one of the leading maritime museums in the world. Over 500 historic watercraft are featured in the exhibits and collections. There's also a massive gallery of maritime art, a research library, a shipyard for restoring old ships, and a recreation of the seaport village as it was in the 19th century.

The restaurants also draw huge crowds in Mystic, with seafood reigning - understandably due to Mystic's location. Indulge in some of New England's famous clam chowder to get a taste of the sea. There's also a wide variety of lobster, crab cakes, steamed clams, and other regional seafood to satisfy your appetite. During the summer time, grab a few scoops of homemade ice cream with fun flavors such as Sticky Fractured Finger and Seaport Salty Swirl. Mystic Pizza is located in the town as well, which some might recognize from the 1980s Julia Roberts movie.

When to Visit Mystic, Connecticut

The best time to visit Mystic is in the fall, particularly in September and October. The fall foliage is at its peak, drawing thousands of tourists to see the natural beauty of the town. The weather is much more pleasant than during the hot and humid summer, with temperatures around the 60s. Hotel rates have dropped some from the busy summer season, making it more affordable to vacation. During the second week in September, the Mystic Ears Food Festival takes place. Sample local vendors' food and drink, and listen to live music while having a drink in the beer tent.

Spring is also an enjoyable time to visit, particularly in April and May. The weather is slowly warming up and getting the town out of its winter freeze, and local events increase in number. Foodies will love the Mystic Food Truck Rally, which takes place at the end of May. Over 30 local food trucks participate to give guests a taste of the region, accompanied by drinks and live music. Local flowers are blooming during this season and hotel prices are still fairly low due to the anticipation of the very busy tourist season come summer.

Mystic is quaint, especially old Mystic. Shops in Old Mystic have items you would not find in most places. A good place to eat is Steak Loft. I am not a steak eater but I found the steak to be very good. Prices are reasonable. Mystic Diner is really good as well. I loved walking around Mystic Seaport.
