The Detroit center is approximately the area of River Rouge and the area of Hamtramck.
Detroit is a city that has recently caught a bad rap in the media but if you know where to go, it can be a great experience. I would stay in Greektown close to Ford Field, Comerica Park, the Fox Theatre, and the Greektown Casino. You should be careful at night, don't wonder too far from Greektown but as long as you stay in that area you are safe. There are tons of restaurants ranging from upscale to your hole in the wall pub. Check the schedule for Saint Andrews Hall for a small, unique rock venue or the Detroit Symphony Orchestra if you like classical. I recommend visiting in the summer because there are tons of music, art, and food festivals going on the river front as well as the Woodward Dream Cruise in August where over 1,000,000 classic cars come to the area to cruise Woodward Ave.
Detroit can easily be a year-round destination for those who enjoy summer heat, the cooler temperatures of spring and fall, or snow activities during the winter. The high season runs from May to September with the summer months being the busiest. Temperatures during this time can reach the low 80s making this an ideal time for outdoor activities. October to February is the low season with fewer crowds and temperatures in the 40s to 60s. For snow enthusiasts, winters are cold with temperatures in the 20s and 30s.
During special events, holidays, festivals, and sporting events scheduled throughout the year, expect crowds and higher rates. Summer is the busiest season because of the warm weather and school break. Fall and winter do not attract heavy crowds. Spring usually brings fewer visitors but the weather is relatively mild, which makes it a good time to visit.
Overall, Detroit receives an average of 183 days of sunshine and 126 days of precipitation each year. Rain averages 30 inches per year and snowfall can average 33 inches, which is above the average of 25 inches received annually in U.S. cities. The comfort index for humidity is higher than the U.S. average.

As a large and established city, there is no shortage age of cheap hotel within the city center of Detroit to choose from. If you are looking to save a bit of coin then try the Shorecrest Motor Inn. Though it might seem like any other city in the US, there are some truly exceptional examples of art that is specific to Detroit all over the city and many of them are not too far from most mainstream Detroit hotels. One place people should visit is the Detroit Institute of Arts. This is not a museum it is an evergreen art exhibition showcasing the work of local remarkable artists filled with painting sculpture and installations. The collections are always being updated and have impressed a lot of critics. Another destination is Comerica Park. This is more of a cultural and excursion about the art of sport than anything else. There are few better ways to understand Detroit than a visit to the baseball park.

There is EVERYTHING there: entertainment (Fox, Opera House, Symphony, various other theaters); the BEST restaurants around; any sport venue one could wish, art museums, do not forget Greenfield Village AND easy access to another country. Detroit has everything to entertain in our opinion.

I was impressed with the city of Detroit. It was clean. It was quiet and free of bombs in every corner like most big cities. Everyone we encountered was friendly, and I did not have any problems walking around throughout the city exploring.
Great location for restaurants and casino!
Property was clean and staff very friendly.
We were in the city to visit our son for just a day, so we didn't take advantage of the Detroit attractions. However, we enjoyed an excellent dinner in Corktown at Ottava Via.
Campus Martius
Excellent food and fun bars all within walking distance of the Shinola Hotel.

I was only there for a day but I really liked Midtown Detroit. I also had dinner downtown at Andiamo and it was delicious. The Riverwalk was a beautiful place for an evening stroll.
Had not been downtown in the city of Detroit in over ten years. I was pleasantly surprised of all the progress. Hats off to all that have been a part of revitalization.

I saw snow for the first time in over a decade. I reside in Florida. Beautiful city. I don't know what the 'snowflake' population is talking about with the high crime rate. I was welcomed in this stunning city.

There many things to do and visit while in Detroit. Most things were within walking distance.
I liked the view of the city. It looked nice outside at night. Stopped by shake shack and that is some GOOD food. Detroit knows how to make burgers! They had some of the best shakes I've ever had too.
This city reminds me New York, I love it!

I have loved Detroit for a long time, before it was getting cool again, but now it's really great to visit.
The history of Detroit was fascinating in itsself. Motown, The Charles Wright Black History Museum, I was never bored while in this city.
Greektown Casino is great. There is lots to see and do.
We really enjoyed the Hitsvill U.S.A Museum of Motown.
I live here so I am already familiar with the revival of the city!
Detroit is a happening place; we knew that when we picked it for our group visit, but it was better than we dreamed.
DIA and the Motown Museum are some of my "must-sees".
Detroit is a tough city not to like. It's the Midwest, but it is a real city with a respectful history worthy of discovery. Michigan roads are among the worst I have ever seen. Only Africa has more potholes, but then... those really aren't roads in the developed world sense.
It's Home. Whether you're a tourist or a local Detroit has endless fun and entertainment to go around.
There are pockets of revitalization throughout Detroit that make exploring the city a process of discovery. From the grandeur of Art Deco buildings from the early 20th century (Guardian and Fischer buildings) to the resurgence of cultural hot spots like Eastern Market, Mexicantown and Midtown, the city is a chronicle of the best and worst of American culture.
Detroit reminded me very much of home. My experience was great and the people were very friendly.
Downtown Detroit is nice. It's clean, has a vibrant night life and folks are friendly.
The river walk is lovely, the city is clean and beautiful. Excellent dinning experience every time at the Hudson Cafe. Shopping along Woodward Ave was delightful and delicious speciality coffee shops could be found around every corner. Detroit is a beautiful city home to wonderful and welcoming people.
African American Museum was good.
Awesome dinner at the Parthenon and dessert at the bakery across the street in Greektown after shopping at the sports store. We got to walk along the Thanksgiving day parade on our way to the Lions game at Ford field. And had a great meal at Sweetwater tavern. Always a great treat.
