Situated on the Rio Grande, Albuquerque was named after Francisco, Duke of Albuquerque, the viceroy of New Spain in the mid-1600s. The first “r” in the name was dropped once the village had been established due to the fact that many locals found the original name hard to pronounce. For much of its early history, Albuquerque was a farming and sheep-herding community. The population grew along with technological achievements such as the electric street railway. By 1926, travelers on Route 66 were discovering Albuquerque in record numbers, resulting in restaurants, motels, and gift shops springing up.
Today, Albuquerque offers a diverse range of cultural events, living history museums, authentic Southwest and Native American shops, golf courses, outdoor activities, and film tourism that continue to draw in visitors. Whatever your reason for exploring Albuquerque, it's important to find the ideal hotel that allows you to enjoy everything this wonderful city has to offer.
When to Visit Albuquerque, NM
Albuquerque has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are generally mild with highs rarely dipping below the upper 40s. Due to the cooler temperatures in the Sandia Mountains, however, Albuquerque is a prime destination for skiers preparing to hit the nearby slopes. Because of this, accommodations tend to fill up fast, so be sure to book your room at least a few weeks in advance.
Spring offers the best weather, but seasonal winds can make the air feel chilly at times. Must-see events from March to May include the National Fiery Foods and Barbecue Show, the Southwest Chocolate & Coffee Fest, the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow, and ABQ Beer Week. Springtime also brings ample hotel deals for budget-minded travelers.
Summers in Albuquerque are hot, but highs rarely go above the low 90s. You can also expect frequent afternoon showers, so be sure to keep an umbrella handy. The rain does tend to keep summer crowds away, though, so you shouldn't have a problem finding great deals. Exciting summer events you won't want to miss include the Albuquerque Folk Festival, the Macaroni & Cheese Festival, and Albuquerque Hopfest.
Fall is Albuquerque's peak season, but it's also the best time to visit. Although hotel rates tend to be higher, you can't beat the warm weather and variety of outdoor festivals, including the renowned Albuquerque International Balloon Festival. If you're hoping to avoid the most expensive rates, try to plan your trip around popular events.

A visit to Albuquerque Recapped
Most tourists simply pass through New Mexico's central area, but it has some isolated places of interest. New Mexico's biggest city Albuquerque sits dead center in the midst of small towns. Albuquerque is the site of New Mexico's only major airport, and serves as the gateway to the route towards either the southwest's most desolate areas or to the Sky City of Acoma Pueblo. Nestled at the heart of the state, Albuquerque sits at the confluence of the old rail routes to Mexico and the Rio Grande. It is without doubt New Mexico's only metropolis of importance. Though many ignore the city for Santa Fe, the Duke City still has discernable original Hispanic traces, and the rare mix of population gives it a sense of cultural vibrancy. Albuquerque's architecture may seem uninspired, but nothing can beat its magnificent setting. The city is sandwiched by the scenic Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande, making a tour of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, the neon-lit frontage of Route 66, and the Spanish Plaza such a sight to behold.

Hotel is located a few blocks from the downtown nightlife if you're young and like that stuff still. Old town is a must visit. In old town is also the Breaking Bad Store/Museum/Tour and down the street is a history museum and a science museum. Catch an air balloon ride if it's still in season.
