Welcome to Mexico City
A sprawling, bustling metropolis, Mexico City is a vibrant destination to visit. The capital of Mexico is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with 16 boroughs, over 300 neighborhoods and a population of about 8.8 million. It may seem overwhelming at first, but most of the tourist attractions are concentrated in the historic center, such as the National Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral, Alemeda Park and many more. West of the historic center lies the Plaza de la Republica, home to the newly renovated Revolution Monument and the National Museum. Many visitors enjoy the artsy neighborhoods of Zona Rosa, Roma, Condesa, Coyoacan and San Angel, where cafes, parks and markets abound.
Wondering what to pack? Mexico City has a subtropical highland climate with warm summers reaching high temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and moderate winters with an average temperature of 60 degrees. May through August also bring in the most rainfall, the wettest month being July, so pack accordingly. To get around the capital, you're best bet is to take sitio taxis (official taxis registered to a specific hotel or locale) or rent a car. The Metro, though cheap, has been riddled with crime so many travelers tend to avoid it when possible. Keep an eye out for pickpockets in crowded public places.
