Over the years, the stretch of the Ganga river (India's holiest river, which makes the Great Indo-Gangetic plain) above the pilgrim town of Rishikesh had infrastructure that was limited and catered mainly to the pilgrim traffic headed up to the holy shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath. Very little existed for the leisure and active traveler, or the vacationer, considering this is the quickest one can get to the Himalaya. Atali, set amidst reserved Forest and over 300 trees, has changed all that.Distinguished by its use of stone, reed and steel wire, the project abandons a commonplace aesthetic and other such iconographic elements to distinguish itself in favor of a building that draws its aesthetic from the means, methods and modes of its construction. The resort consists of a stone building that houses a storage facility on the lower level and a dormitory on the upper level, a veranda with a tensile roof that frames the surrounding mountains, a cafe and cottages for guests. The first building, made of stone, encased in galvanized gabion boxes and tied to each other with steel wire was constructed predominantly out of material that was either found on site or excavated from it.A forecourt is recognizable by the brick pavers with aggregate stone infill. It follows the same visual vocabulary as the gabion building and is the primary point of entry. The point of arrival is through a verandah that frames the natural landscape, to the hills and river beyond. Enhanced by the potent and saturated shade of orange on the verandah's roof that compresses the space and leads people through it to the pool. This structure acts as both a transitory space and a space of refuge at the resorts entry level. A tensile roof crowns the conference room above the verandah, adding a whimsical twist to the otherwise stark geometry of the stone building. Connecting these two structures is a two level reed trellis with an elliptical staircase puncturing it. The staircase, terminates in a small deck that faces the river and hills beyond.The cottages sit comfortably and responsibly on the hill, they have an ageless quality about them. People come to see the architecture! The cottages that dot the upper levels are characterized by their spartan luxuriousness. Entered through a private verandah, a central stone wall demarcates the tripartite bathroom from the bedroom. Extensively glazed, they open themselves up to the surrounding landscape.Located 30 km from Rishikesh, guests can plan their holiday with choices listed on our innovative activity schedule. Sip sundowners after a busy day outdoors, and dine under the stars. Atali offers 22 private, comfortable and independent cottages overlooking the Ganga valley, a 60 seater restaurant, the White Water Café and even Conference facilities. The USP is also its High Ropes Challenge Course – it will challenge you, inspire you, and at times, humble you. Other activities include the pool, 24 foot climbing wall, rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, abseiling, hiking, yoga, and jumaring. Be it eskimo rolling a kayak, climbing up a steep wall face, hiking with your kids, identifying different birds of the tropical Indian forests, stretching a bit with some early morning yoga, mountain biking through a jungle and rafting down India's sin-cleansing holy corridor of exciting whitewater…….we offer it all.
