A Brief History of Oromocto
The town was originally an Acadian village. After the rebellion at Maugerville, Fort Hughes was built in the community here. Many Loyalists moved into surrounding areas, establishing smaller communities such as Lincoln and Geary. Oromocto was a 19th century shipbuilding place. In the early 1950s, it was chosen as the headquarters for a large military training area. The city was transformed into a "model town". CFB Gagetown dominates Oromocto's economy today.
The Saint John River valley's lush vegetation and attractive waterfront on both rivers provides this location. The small park and marina on the Oromocto River waterfront near downtown is a great place to relax. It features nightlife attractions, shopping malls, and a business district, as well as a small hospital, track and field facilities, and churches. It is home to a distribution center, a funeral home, a library and a recreation center. There is a salon, barbershop, hockey/squash arenas, swimming pool, and a credit union at the town border, along with military vehicles and aircraft on outdoor display. The Oromocto First Nations reserve is east. And also here is the Canadian National Railway.
