The Peninsula's swimming pool (8th floor) has been designed to offer swimmers uninterrupted views of the Hong Kong skyline, whilst a retractable glass screen can be closed over the front elevation of the entire pool area to allow year-round use. The pool is 18 m (60 ft) long, 1.5 m (5 ft) deep, and is modelled on a classical Roman theme with columns, friezes, statues and niches to evince a palatial setting. The pool is linked to a sun-terrace and Fitness Centre, which extends out over the west wing of the original building and covers an area of approximately 1,600 sq m (17,000 sq ft), and featuring technologically advanced exercise equipment, jacuzzis, saunas, steam rooms and cold tubs.
