History of Alaska Zoo: The Start of a Unique Wildlife Sanctuary in Anchorage, AK
Back in 1966, a grocer from Fairbanks, Alaska, won a Crown Zellerbach tissue sales contest and was given a choice between a $3,000 prize or a baby elephant named Annabelle. Opting for the latter, Annabelle was transported to Alaska from her previous life as a young circus animal. However, the grocer soon realized he did not have the necessary resources or ability to care for a baby elephant in the Alaskan wilderness. He approached Sammye Seawell, the owner of Diamond H Horse Ranch in Anchorage, who had a heated horse stall, to ask if she could take Annabelle in. Sammye agreed, and the two quickly developed a close relationship, often walking around the ranch. As people learned about Annabelle's presence, they contacted Sammye to ask if they could visit and see the elephant. Sammye recognized the potential for public interaction with Annabelle and also saw the opportunity to care for orphaned and injured wildlife. When wildlife officials approached her with an orphaned black bear and an Arctic fox, she knew she needed a better way to let the public interact with the animals. In 1968, the Alaska Zoo was established as a nonprofit organization, and a plot of land adjacent to the horse ranch was prepared. Finally, on August 2nd, 1969, the Alaska Children's Zoo officially opened its doors to the public. Since then, the Alaska Zoo has grown in size and popularity, featuring various animals and exhibits, and has become an integral part of the Anchorage community. However, it all started with Annabelle, the baby circus elephant, and a grocer's decision to choose her as his prize. Annabelle's arrival in Alaska triggered a series of events that culminated in the establishment of the Alaska Zoo, which has continued to serve the community for over half a century.
