Opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips in 1950, Sun Studio has become known as the birthplace of rock 'n' roll. Located in the heart of Memphis at 706 Union Avenue, the building was originally called Memphis Recording Service and is perhaps most well-known for playing host to Elvis Presley's first recorded song. It has also been home to recordings by celebrities Little Milton, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, and Charlie Rich, among others. In addition to historically famous performers, the studio also served as a home for many lesser-known rockabilly artists.The building and ownership have undergone several transformations since its original opening, coordinating with agencies like Phillips Recording and Sun Records. After closing briefly, the original Sun Records building reopened in 1987 as not only a recording business but also a tourist attraction. It has heralded visits from famous acts such as U2, who recorded tracks there for “Rattle and Hum.” Other notable artists include Roy Orbison, Ray Harris, Warren Smith, and Jerry Lee Lewis.During your visit to Sun Studio, be sure to check out the upstairs museum, boasting much of music's storied history.
