The area where Cranberry now sits has been home to the Iroquois, Delaware, and Seneca people for generations before Europeans settled there. Two brothers, Matthew and William Graham, were the first Europeans to acquire land in Cranberry. As Revolutionary War soldiers, they received 200 acres as part of Benjamin Franklin's Depreciation Land program.
The brothers, along with Samuel Duncan who moved to the community shortly after, developed several local businesses including grist and saw mills, a tavern, and a distillery. In 1806 the Graham brothers opened the Plains Church. Although it's called the Plains United Presbyterian Church today, it is a long-serving part of the Cranberry community.
Cranberry was first chartered in 1804 when it had a much larger area. Its boundaries were redrawn in 1854, reducing its area from 81 square miles to just 25.
