Opened in 1996, the Canadian Tire Centre (formerly the Palladium, the Corel Centre and Scotiabank Place) is the home of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. With seating and standing room for between 19,000 and 20,000 fans, the arena is located in Kanata, a suburb of Canada's capital city. The first NHL game was played there January 17th, 1996 between the Senators and the Montreal Canadiens. While struggling in their first few seasons of existence, the Senators won the Northeast Division in 1998-1999 and 2000-2001. In 2002-2003, Ottawa achieved a team record 113 points and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to eventual Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils. The Senators made it to the Cup Final in 2006-2007, but fell to the Anaheim Ducks in five games. Canadian Tire Center has also hosted the OHL's Ottawa 67's from 2012-2014 and the NBL's Ottawa SkyHawks from 2013-2014.
The Canadian Tire Centre is located at 1000 Palladium Drive, just off the Trans-Canada Highway and 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa. The two roads to use to access the arena are Terry Fox Road and Palladium Drive. For playoffs or other major events at the arena, the Palladium Drive exit usually has less traffic congestion. It is also a good idea to arrive early to the event. General parking is available at Lots 5, 6 and 9, with limited parking at Lot 1 and Lot 4. There is also a valet lot. Canadian Tire Centre is also accessible by public transportation, as OC Transpo Routes 401, 402, 403, 404 and 405 run to the arena for Senators games and other events.
Once inside the arena, there are plenty of places to choose from for a pre-game meal. They include By Town Grill, Molson Canadian Brew Pub, Fat Boys BBQ, Bert's, dubbed the official Sens Army headquarters, as well as several concession stands for Pizza Pizza, Tim Horton's and others.
