The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert
The San Francisco Zoo, which is run by the San Francisco Zoological Society, is located in southwestern San Francisco. It is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium. The zoo was first opened in 1929 with very few animals. Since then, the zoo has expanded to a total of one hundred and twenty-five acres. There are over two hundred and fifty species of animals. Grizzly bears, penguins, and gorillas are just a few of the animals that call the San Francisco Zoo home. The zoo is divided into five regions. These regions are Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and North America. Each region houses the animals that are native to that region. To see everything the zoo has to offer, allow about three to four hours for a visit.
