The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert
The Orpheum Theatre is located beside the Art Institute of California in San Francisco on the corner of Market Street and 8th. The main library of the city is right across the street. In 1926, the theatre, by architect B. Marcus Priteca, opened. The exterior is copied after a Spanish cathedral of the 12th century. Arched doorways open into the lobby. Inside, the theatre has a high, domed ceiling displaying a scene of illuminated stars. The Orpheum Theatre is an official San Francisco Landmark. Plans and organized effort will keep the building preserved for the future. So Broadway productions were easier to perform, the theatre received a renovation in 1998. The theatre hosts long running, popular Broadway shows, and has hosted silent films, musical comedy and more. Parking is available behind the theatre and across 8th Street. Nearby, at 355 McAllister, is the Civic Center Parking Garage.
