Opened in 1891, Reid's has been one of the world's great hotels ever since.Commanding a rocky promontory to the west of Funchal, the hotel is surrounded by 10 acres of lush sub-tropical gardens. Secluded paths through the palm trees and flowers lead to spectacular viewpoints far above the Atlantic's breakers.A haven of tranquillity, Reid's is the perfect place for a relaxing break when you will be cosseted by the staff and entertained with fine wine and gourmet food.The active will find plenty to do. There are two heated swimming pools (1 fresh water and 1 seawater) and a tidal seawater pool. Scuba diving, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing windsurfing and water-skiing are available. Away from the sea, tennis (pro on-site), horse riding, bridge, billiards and more are available to please every taste. Some activities are extra of charge. Two nearby golf courses offer guests reduced green fees. An extensive range of activities is available for children of all ages (Christmas, Easter, end of May to September).Fine dining is available in four superb restaurants: William Restaurant, a gourmet restaurant overlooking the sea and bay of Funchal/Pool Restaurant, alfresco restaurant overlooking the Atlantic; Ristorante Villa Cipriani, an informal restaurant serving Italian specialities, and the formal and elegant “The Dining Room”.Traditional afternoon tea is still served on the terrace overlooking the sea, as it was for Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw, royalty and countless celebrities who have frequented Reid's over the years.
