An art gallery located in the Hotel Sale in rue de Thorigny in the Marsais district of Paris, Picasso Museum, or Musee Picasso, was built in the mid-1600s and is considered to be one of the most extraordinary historic houses in the Marais. The museum contains more than 3,000 different works of art by Pablo Picasso and his own personal art collection of works by other artists, including Cezanne, Degas, Rousseau, and Matisse. Most impressive, many of Picasso's works in the Picasso Museum were painted after the artist's 70th birthday.The mansion that houses the museum has been a residence as well as a school and was acquired by the City of Paris in 1964, later granted historical monument status in 1968. The Picasso Museum is arranged primarily in chronological sequence with its many paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints. Other items include photographs, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, and photos that provide contextual information.
