Located about 10 miles south of central Baltimore, this busy international airport got its start before the end of World War II. In 1944, the Baltimore Aviation Commission saw a need for a new airport, and they chose a convenient spot 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore — close to railroad lines and the proposed Baltimore-Washington Parkway. After years of planning, ground was broken in the spring of 1947. Since most of the land had been purchased by the Friendship Methodist Church, the airport was dedicated on June 24, 1950 as Friendship International Airport.
In 1972, the City of Baltimore sold the airport to the Maryland Department of Transportation. After expanding and modernizing the facility, Friendship International Airport was renamed Baltimore/Washington International Airport to attract passengers from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The airport underwent a final name change in 2005, becoming Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to honor the former U.S. Supreme Court justice and Baltimore native Thurgood Marshall.
Today, BWI is one of three major airports serving the Baltimore-Washington metro area. It is the second-largest airport by the number of Southwest Airlines departures, coming in after Chicago-Midway. BWI has also been ranked as the best airport of its size for service quality.
No matter your reason for visiting the airport, the right hotel can help you enjoy a stress-free travel experience.
