The Bilbao center point is approximately the area of Santiago Cathedral and the area of Basque Museum.
A visit to the Guggenheim Museum was my number one reason for making the journey to Bilbao, Spain. A five hour train ride from Madrid, Bilbao is located in northern Spain, near the French border, in what is known as Basque country. I enjoyed the train ride since our second class coach was clean and comfortable. I saw some spectacular rock formations along the way and as I got closer to Bilbao the scenery opened up to green hillsides and rocky stream. It was Saturday in Bilbao so after hours exploring the Guggenheim, I did a "pintxos" crawl, going from bar to bar for appetizers and a drink. The food and the people were very unique to Basque country and something that every person should experience in their lifetime.
This sort of philosophy of favoring the work over the trend in an artistic sense is a part of the heritage of his hometown of Bilbao in many ways. One can even see this in the hotels in Bilbao as they are exotic yet laid back in a fashion that is similar to the work of many artists who come from there. Of course, what the city truly is known for is it effective and popular football team that has made its name as one of the top clubs in European football history.
