In response to a call from Brigham Young to set up a Cotton Mission in Southern Utah, a group of Mormon pioneers settled in Springdale in 1862. Local lore claims the name came from one of the settler's wives. He built a house near a large spring, and when he asked her to name it, she called it Springdale.
The town itself is very small. According to the 2010 Census, there are only 529 permanent residents in Springdale.
