Salado was incorporated in 1867 for the sole purpose of constructing a much-needed bridge across Salado Creek. Prior to that, Native American tribes called the area home. In fact, the Buttermilk Creek Complex, a paleolithic settlement, has been unearthed in Salado, proving the area's importance dating back about 15,500 years. The first European settlers arrived in 1834, but frequent tribal attacks and General Santa Anna's invading army prevented them from settling down.
Starting in 1866 and lasting until 1885, the famous Chisholm Trail cattle drive passed through the area, which caused a need for the Salado Creek bridge. By 1884, Salado was home to 900 people and had 14 stores, seven churches, two blacksmiths, two hotels, and three cotton gins. Today, 19 locations throughout town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village is also known for its fine art and jewelry galleries.
