The city was initially settled in 1825 by Wooster Harrison. It started as a small town at the mouth of Sauk Creek. A fire destroyed half of the town on February 19, 1899. After the fire restoration efforts made the town the most extensive collection of pre-Civil War buildings in Wisconsin.
