The Rich History of Maryville, MO

Located on a rolling prairie above the scenic One Hundred and Two River, Maryville, MO was established in 1845 as the newly organized Nodaway County seat. The town is named after Mary House Graham, the first white woman settler and the wife of county official Amos Graham. The county's name is derived from the Nodaway River, named after the Algonquian word for "snake" or "enemy." As the largest of six counties formed from the Platte Purchase territory acquired from Native Americans in 1836, Nodaway County has a rich history intertwined with the growth of Maryville. Maryville is home to Northwest Missouri State University, founded by the state legislature in 1905 as the Fifth District Normal School. The city and county successfully bid $58,672 and 86 acres, including the building and grounds of the Maryville Seminary, to secure the school's location. Today, the university displays early farm implements and an impressive art collection, adding to the cultural heritage. Maryville developed as a critical marketing town and shipping point in a region known for grain and livestock farming, particularly hogs. The arrival of the Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Council Bluffs Railroad (Burlington) in 1869, followed by the Wabash, St. Louis, and Pacific Railroad (Wabash) in 1879, further boosted its economic growth. Maryville is situated in Missouri's Glacial Plains Region, a territory that was once home to the Iowa, Sac, and Fox tribes and, for a short period, the Potawatomi Indians. The first settlers, mainly from the South, arrived in the late 1830s. Nearby, Conception was founded as a Catholic colony by Irish railroad workers led by Father James A. Power. The area later saw a significant influx of German settlers. The Benedictine Fathers established Conception Abbey in 1873 and New Engelberg College, now Conception Seminary, in 1883. The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 1880s, is a notable landmark. Additionally, the Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration was founded in nearby Clyde in 1875. Maryville is also the birthplace of renowned author and lecturer Dale Carnegie and novelist Homer Croy. Albert P. Morehouse, governor from 1887-89, lived in Maryville, while Forrest C. Donnell, who served as governor from 1940 to 1944, was born in the nearby town of Quitman. Notable writer and jurist Merrill E. Otis was born near Hopkins. Maryville's rich history and famous figures associated with Maryville, its convenient location amidst urban hubs and natural landscapes, guarantee its spot on every traveler's itinerary. Plan your journey with HotelPlanner to secure your accommodation in Maryville, MO, and get ready to discover the best of both urban and countryside living.
