The Lorton center point is around the area of Lorton Amtrak Station and 3 miles north of Woodbridge Amtrak.
Lorton is a rainy city, with every month getting more than an average of 2 inches of precipitation. June, July, and October are the rainiest, with each month getting an average of more than 5 inches (with more than 6 inches in June). If you're traveling during these months, be prepared for some wet days — and coupled with the possibility of intense heat, things can get pretty muggy in this part of Virginia.
June through August are the hottest months, with a chance to see temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. Things cool off plenty in the fall and winter though. Highs from November through February stay under 80, with lows sometimes dipping into the single digits from January through March. Finally, though Lorton is close to Washington, D.C., its air quality index is one percent better than the national average, and its pollution index is 92 percent better than the national average. Whether you're out golfing, hiking, kayaking, or sightseeing, take a breath — the air is great here.
The hot, muggy summers discourage many from visiting during that time, as do the large crowds that swarm to the coast for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Luckily, you can avoid much of the surge if you stay in the small town of Lorton. To enjoy some days with temperatures warm enough for water sports before the rates increase for the summer, visit during April or early May. Otherwise, your best bet is to visit during the fall. Venture into the Coastal Plains to see some stunning fall foliage.

The Westin Alexandria has one of the best values in the area. Not only is this location inside of the I-495 loop and a short drive from Washington D.C., but it's also a four-star hotel with rates that are only slightly higher than the budget options mentioned above. The Westin Alexandria is within 10 miles of numerous attractions and sights, including The Pentagon and the National Museum of American History. Paid Wi-Fi is available, but all rooms come with complementary flat-screens with cable TV channels. Complimentary breakfast and evening appetizers are served, and there's an on-site restaurant and bar.
For something even more affordable, TownePlace Suites by Marriott Springfield is a great choice. This is a two-star hotel that has received consistently high reviews. Rest easy knowing that the service, location, room cleanliness, and hot breakfasts have all received rave reviews from past customers. Services are minimal but reliable. Patrons can enjoy free Wi-Fi and breakfast, a shuttle service, and an outdoor pool.
Your trip to Lorton will probably include some time in Washington, D.C. Just take Interstate 95 to Interstate 395. This leads right into the downtown area and is only about 40 minutes away by car. Below are reviews of the city of Lorton, VA from an actual visitor's perspective.
We went from the highway to the hotel to the auto train. We did have dinner at Naty's next to the hotel and it was very good. We tried it thanks to a very helpful woman at the front desk and we weren't disappointed. It's nicer than you might think from the outside and has a terrific menu, something for everyone.
