Holts Summit has a rich history rooted in pioneering spirit and the pursuit of new beginnings. The early settlers, mainly from Virginia, included Abner Holt and his family, who braved the journey to Howard County, Missouri, in 1819, enduring a harsh winter before constructing a home in what would later become Holts Summit. In the prosperous community, Timothy Holt, Abner's grandson, established the town around a general store in 1870. Naming it "Holts Summit" aptly reflected its geographical significance as the highest elevation en route to the Missouri River. The settlement's connectivity was further enhanced by the "Hibernia Station," a train stop that facilitated travel to and from the area until the rise of automobile travel led to its demolition in 1934. Despite this, the town's development continued, and in 1973, Holts Summit was officially incorporated, marking a new chapter in its history. The 1960s and 1970s saw a revival in Missouri's winemaking traditions, leading to the establishment of Summit Lake Winery in 2002. This connected Holts Summit to the Missouri Rhineland, an area renowned for its vineyards along the Missouri River. The winery not only honors the region's agricultural legacy but also adds to the local appeal as a destination that marries historical appeal with the art of winemaking. Holts Summit offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past, celebrating the town's origins and evolution into a community rich in heritage and hospitality.
