However, Guthrie's importance is not just territorial. It is a nationally significant city, as it preserved a collection of commercial buildings of the late 19th and 20th centuries, which are architecturally valuable for the country.
Start your visit from Guthrie's Historic District. Here you'll be able to attend the Oklahoma Territorial Museum and Carnegie Library complex.
The Museum features a comprehensive list of material and archival artifacts that document the city's history from being an unassigned land, through the Land Run, up to these days. Carnegie Library was founded in 1902, becoming a second Carnegie Library in OK; however, today, it is the oldest existing Carnegie Library. It was included in the National List of Historic Places in 1971. Andrew Carnegie was a wealthy steel manufacturer in the 1890s. He generously donated to build libraries worldwide (2,811 across the globe) and in Oklahoma (25).
The library has been used for multiple community events throughout history. In the 1930s, kids enjoyed story hours on these walls. In the 50-the 60s, the library hosted Teen Town - a popular gathering space for local youth. It even hosted inaugurations.
Moving forward through the Historic District of Guthrie, you will stumble upon another unusual museum. Frontier Drugstore Museum is a passion project of a local pharmacist, Ralph Enix. In the 1970s, he and several colleagues started forming what by 1992 will become a rich collection of artifacts and ephemera reflecting the history of pharmacy in the 19th and 20th centuries.
